Overcoming Resistance to Change

Overcoming Resistance to Change

Today I experienced something completely new to me.

My client stopped me in the middle of our session and shared that she was feeling overwhelmed by what was coming up and needed to stop for the day.

At first I tried to console her and tell her that even if she wasn’t able to mentally take it all in her body would still take care of the healing. That didn’t seem to help and I could feel her discomfort and resistance to what was happening. The session was bringing up a lot of deep emotions, past experiences, and challenging feelings that were uncomfortable. They had hidden inside of her, deeply enough to cause physical pain and they didn’t want to leave.

You see, when we resist something so insistently its usually when we have reached our ‘limit’ of comfort. Its when are outside of our comfort zone, in new territory, and right on the brink of big change! My clients work with me because they want change. They aren’t 100% happy with the way things are, whether that is in their health, relationships, business, life, they don’t feel like they have reached their fullest potential and something needs to change. Thats when they call me, asking for help to catalyze the lasting, effective change.  The tricky part comes next.

The Tricky Part- Wanting change in our reality (our outside world) means that we have to be willing to change ourselves. You are the creator of your reality. What is happening inside you (the way all of your body parts are functioning and communicating with each other) is reflected in the way you experience life. Think of it like this, if you have a pair of glasses with green tinted lenses on then everything you see is going to be tinted green. Now, imagine that you don’t know you have green tinted glasses on, say your eyes had green tinting. You would assume that is the way reality looks, because its all you’ve known. There’s nothing to compare it to. That’s the way our life works. We are all experiencing our reality through the lens or filter of our body (its beliefs, stored emotions, past experiences, its chemistry, etc.)

So for real change to happen, it has to come from within us. That is the essence of the work I do with my clients. Helping them heal and improve the fundamental ways their body and all of its aspects work together so they can have an improved experience of life.

And that change, as much as we want it, can be very scary.

Its new, its unfamiliar and we have to learn how to be, but we’ve changed, and thats what we wanted.

Have you been looking for a way to change something you are experiencing in your life?

Here are 5 things to remember when you are seeking change…

1- Wanting change means being willing to change.

2- Change can be scary. Trust that any fear you feel is a sign your headed in the right direction. Out of your comfort zone and into a new and improved reality.

3- Life is change. Nothing is constant. Your ability to go with the flow will serve your highest potential and your ability to always show up for each and every moment as your best self no matter what.

4- Focus on the now to change the future. The best way to support your highest vision of yourself and your dreams becoming your reality is to stay present. Its the only moment we have and its where we create our future. If you are feeling something in this moment that doesn’t support your fullest potential then your presence will give you everything you need to change it and create a new reality.

5- Keep breathing. When your body is changing and letting go of old emotions breathing is a necessary function of your body that will help you let go. Your instinct when you are in a new or unfamiliar experience will probably be to hold your breath but its important that you keep breathing, in and out, and trust your body to take care of the letting go.

I hope this post has inspired you to shake things up a bit in your life, go for your dreams, live as your best self, and keep rolling with the changes (the joy is in the ride)!
